When he wrought that sorcery, fierce creatures appeared — vampires, ghosts, goblins carrying bows and arrows. Yoginis wielded swords, holding human skulls in one hand. Drinking fresh blood, they danced and sang. 'Seize! Kill!' — terrible cries filled every direction. They ran with gaping mouths to devour; then the monkeys began to lose their lives. Wherever monkeys fled, they saw blazing fire. Monkeys and bears were distressed; then sand began to rain. Having exhausted the monkeys everywhere, the ten-headed one roared again. Lakshmana, the monkey king, and all the warriors lost consciousness. 'O Rama! O Raghunath!' the warriors cried, wringing their hands. Having thus broken all their strength, he created another illusion. He manifested many Hanumans who rushed forth with boulders. They surrounded Rama on all sides, forming a cordon. 'Strike! Seize! Don't let him escape!' they shriek, raising their tails. On all sides langurs shine, and in their midst stands the King of Kosala. In their midst, the King of Kosala, dark-bodied, shines with beauty — like a tall tamala tree amid many a splendid rainbow. Seeing the Lord, the gods felt both joy and sorrow, crying 'Victory! Victory! Victory!' Raghubir, in rage, in the blink of an eye, destroyed the illusion with a single arrow. With the illusion destroyed, the monkeys and bears rejoiced, and seizing trees and mountains, they all rallied. Rama released a volley of arrows, and Ravana's arms and heads fell to the ground again. The battle exploits of Sri Rama and Ravana — even if told across infinite ages — a hundred Sheshas, Sharadas, Vedas, and poets could not reach their end.

Some of these glories were told by the dim-witted Tulsidas, as best as he could — like a fly attempting to fly through the sky. Rama cut heads and arms many times, yet the warrior king of Lanka did not die. The Lord played on while gods, siddhas, and sages watched in distress.
