They began washing the lotus feet, love producing waves of goosebumps on their bodies. Songs, instruments, and cries of "Victory!" seemed to surge forth in all directions from sky and city. Those lotus feet that ever dwell in the lake of the heart of Shiva—by whose mere remembrance the mind's every impurity of Kaliyuga is dispelled. Those feet whose touch liberated the sage's wife Ahalya who had been steeped in sin; whose nectar Shiva bears on his head—the gods declare it the very limit of purity; which sage-yogis serve as bees of the mind and thereby attain their desired salvation—those feet Janaka now washed, and all exclaimed "Victory!" to that vessel of good fortune. The groom and the princess joined their palms while both family priests recited the marriage vows. The wedding-clasping-of-hands took place; beholding it, gods, men, and sages were filled with bliss. The parents were overjoyed seeing the auspicious groom; with thrilled bodies and elated hearts, the jewel among kings performed the gift of the bride following both worldly and Vedic custom. Just as Himavat gave Girija to Mahesha, and the Ocean gave Lakshmi to Hari, so Janaka offered Sita to Rama—a new and beautiful glory resounded throughout the universe. How can Videha make supplication? He has become truly bodiless before that dark-hued form. The sacred fire was kindled as prescribed, the knot was tied, and the circumambulations began.
